Dr. Magovern is a native of Washington, DC. He graduated cum laude from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, where he competed nationally on the Heavyweight Crew Team. He earned his Doctor of Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX.
He completed his Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery residencies at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. During his tenure at Cornell, he devoted 2 years to research in cardiac gene therapy, was part of a team that delivered the first gene therapy treatment to a human heart, and holds a patent related to that work.
Dr. Magovern joined Mid-Atlantic Surgical Associates in 1998. He is board certified in Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery, and performs all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, including minimally-invasive valve surgery, off-pump bypass surgery, and robotic surgery. Annually, he is one of the busiest cardiac surgeons in the State of NJ, with a surgical mortality rate among the lowest in the State.
He is currently a Medical Contributor for ABC News, and has made more than 30 national television appearances on ABC News Good Morning America Health, commenting on, among other things, Michael Jackson's death, Bill Clinton's angioplasty, Barbara Walter's valve surgery, and Dick Cheney's ventricular assist device.
