Dr. Murphy is one of the most experienced robotic heart surgeons in the world. For the past 15 years, Dr. Murphy has focused his career on endoscopic intracardiac surgery using robotic instrumentation. Dr. Murphy has performed over 2000 robotic endoscopic mitral valve procedures and more than 2500 robotically assisted procedures. He continues to teach his completely endoscopic approach, the LEAR technique (Lateral Endoscopic Approach using Robotics) to teams from all over the world. He served as principal investigator in 2002 for the daVinci Surgical System technology, leading the first U.S. Cardiac surgery team in clinical trials in intracardiac surgery and coronary bypasses prior to the FDA approval. Because of his achievements, Emory Saint Joseph's was named the exclusive cardiac southeastern training center for the daVinci system in 2004.
