Dr. Gobi earned his Medical Degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University, completing an accelerated Bachelor of Science and Medical Degree Program. During his Family Medicine Residency at Honor Health and serving as Chief Resident, Dr. Gobi realized his passion for improving the quality of life of patients suffering from pain, and related symptoms, from cancer and a myriad of other chronic conditions/illnesses. He was selected as Mayo Clinic Arizona’s first Palliative Medicine Fellow and completed the fellowship training in 2008.
During Fellowship, Dr. Gobi spent six weeks rotating with and learning from Dr. Lisa Stearns, the Founder of Center for Pain and Supportive Care, and developed an appreciation for utilizing the most advanced modalities, including intrathecal drug delivery (pain pumps) for treating patients’ pain. Dr. Gobi shared Dr. Stearns’ philosophy of treating patients with a whole-person approach and he excitedly joined the Center for Pain and Supportive Care family immediately following fellowship.
Dr. Gobi later transitioned to a role as the Director of Arizona Palliative Home Care (AZPHC). While under his direction, AZPHC was nationally recognized and won the prestigious Circle of Life Award presented by the American Hospital Association. Dr. Gobi missed the patient-physician relationship, and ultimately caring for patients, and was eager to return to the clinic setting with CPSC in October 2019.
Dr. Gobi lectures nationally on topics related to Cancer Pain and Palliative Care. He has found his passion in caring for cancer patients, in all stages of treatment, with pain and symptom management and restoring their quality of life and hope. He is equally passionate in treating Chronic Pain patients who are suffering from pain with the same holistic (mind, body, spirit) approach.
Chronic pain is complex and often has a biopsychosocial element. Having recognized this, Dr. Gobi strived to offer complementary therapies to patients who are either just beginning their journey with chronic pain or have been failed by traditional medications or other therapies. In 2020, Dr. Gobi became Certified in Functional Medicine through the Institute for Functional Medicine, one of only 1500 certified practitioners worldwide. The goal of Functional Medicine is to take a personalized approach to care with the goal of finding root-causes of disease, rather than merely treating its symptoms. Dr. Gobi is a believer that diet and lifestyle changes through a Functional Medicine approach can alleviate many pain and symptoms caused by both Cancer and Chronic Pain, in conjunction with a traditional medical model.
