Dr. Lebowitz earned his medical degree at George Washington University and received his ophthalmology training at Columbia University and Yale University School of Medicine. He completed additional specialty training in diseases and treatment of the retina at the Retina Institute of Maryland, which made him uniquely qualified as a cataract surgeon with formal training in retinal diseases.
Recognizing that medicine has evolved requiring a knowledge of business, he completed a medical executive program at The Wharton School of Business. A board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Lebowitz was chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology for the Christiana Care Health System. He is a member of the Board of Trustees at Christiana Hospital, Executive Board of Limestone Medical Center, and South Jersey Ambulatory Surgery Center. Dr. Lebowitz was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Temple School of Medicine where he was awarded “Preceptor of the Year”. He has been selected by his peers as a member of “Best Doctors” of Delaware, “Top Doctors” of Delaware, and “America’s Top Ophthalmologists”. Dr. Lebowitz has lectured extensively in the tri-state area on health-related topics.
A committed volunteer in the fight against world blindness, Dr. Lebowitz has donated his surgical skills in Vietnam, El Salvador, Senegal, Mauritania and the Caribbean Islands. He has volunteered his time serving the Wilmington homeless population offering free eye care on the St. Francis Outreach Medical Van, an active member of “EyeCare America” and is the only ophthalmologist in Delaware to perform free cataract surgery as a member of Operation Sight of the ASCRS Foundation. With 30 years of experience and more than 20,000 surgical procedures, Dr. Lebowitz’s areas of expertise include cataract surgery utilizing single vision and multifocal lenses and the correction of astigmatism. He also has the added benefit of expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases, especially diabetes and macular degeneration.
An avid fly fisherman and technophile, he enjoys international adventures with his family. His major goal as an ophthalmologist is the enhancement and preservation of his patient’s vision always with the hope of meeting and exceeding his patient’s expectations.
